Here's a great vintage wire spiral cookbook titled:
HEINZ RECIPE BOOK
This recipe collection from 1939 has a wire spiral spine and measures 6 inches wide by 9 inches tall with 212 pages. The front and back covers show some wear around the edges of the covers and some small scuffs. The top left edge has a nick of paper missing (see picture) and a few creases.
INSIDE, the title page has the original owner's name stamped at the top of the page, otherwise the cookbook is at least 99% free of Any marks or writing. There's a little bend to the top pages of the book from shelving. The cookbook DOES HAVE a "been in the attic" scent..not smoke. You have to put your nose deep in the book and its almost like the smell of the paper and ink--aged.
The cookbook is filled with black & white pictures of instructions and sprinkled with color pictures to show off the dish. There's one, two or three recipes per page and the book is full of "from scratch" recipes. The comfort food of the day--just coming out of the depression and just before WWII before rationing.
The recipes cover a wide range, with sections on: First Courses, Main Dishes, Vegetables, Salads and Dressings, Sandwiches, Sauces, Breads, Desserts and Cookies, Candies and Frostings, Menus, Hints and Gadgets, and the Index.
The recipes are more creative than I expected, not just to get you to buy Heinz products. Some of the recipes include: Heinz Tomato juice with Olive Cubes, Ketchup Cheese Rounds, Roquefort Fingers, Stuffed Dill Pickle Hors D'oeuvre, Creamed Chicken in Eclairs, Southern Winter Fried Chicken, Codfish Cakes, Salmon Loaves with Mushroom Sauce, Macaroni Ring with Jambalaya, Grilled Tomatoes in Bacon Jackets, Spinach Loaf, Harvard Beets, Chiffonade and Fruity & Tarragon French Dressings, Banana Peanut Butter Mayonnaise, Manhattan & Calcutta and Pimolo Dressings, Inglagt Salad (with herring), Avacado Aspic Salad, Salmon Salad, Fresh Peach Bon Bon Salad, St. Patrick's Day Salad, Pecan and Cherry Cheese Salad, Pear Macaroon Salad, Nutty Ham Sandwiches, India Relish and Liver Pudding Sandwiches, Campfire Hot Steak Sandwiches, Broiled Baked Bean Sandwiches, Currant Hard Sauce, Peanut Butter Fudge Sauce, Ketchup Sauce, Nippy Rarebit Sauce, Ketchup Butter Sauce, Muffins with Jelly Centers, Fancy Rolls, Pocket book Rolls, Peanut Bran Muffins, Mince Meat Biscuits, Berry Flake Muffins, Peanut Corn Meal Muffins, Fruit Coffee Cake, Heinz Puddings Baked Alaska Style, Peanut Butter and Banana Custard, Apple Butter Refrigerator Roll, Jelly Pecan Cake, Virginia Sponge Cake, Banana Chiffon Pie, Honey Date Bars, Rice Flakes Crisps, Hawaiian Mince Meat Jumbles, Vermont Fondant Base (for bon bons or other sweets), Creamed Black Walnut Taffy, Uncooked Peanut Butter Candy, Chocolate Fudge, Sea Foam Nut Clusters, Hallowe'en Hobgoblins, and many more!
