Here is a wonderful vintage soft cover cookbook from La CROSSE WISCONSIN titled St Joseph Ridge Centennial Cookbook. (Read about the church history below.)
The front and back cover shows some wear from use and re-shelving. There is a film that was protecting the cover that is beginning to break up due to age but it did a good job of protecting the covers for over 50 years. INSIDE the first page has a 1 1/2 inch section of paper missing from the top of the page--I have no doubt that someone had their name up there and they didn't want it out in the world. Other than that, the pages are at least 98% free of any marks, stains or writing.
There are no "chapters" in the cookbook. The index has sections including.... Beverages, Breads, Cakes, Cookies, Desserts, Frostings & Candies, Meats & Vegetables, Pickles, Pies, Salads. Recipes are on the RIGHT side of the page and ads from local businesses are on the LEFT side of the page. (See all the pics.) There are 165 pages PLUS index and blank pages for your own recipes with an average of 4 recipes per recipe page. Wonderful, from scratch cooking!
This cookbook is probably from the late 1950's (1957) and for its age, it is in good condition.
The current St. Joseph Ridge Catholic church was built in 1901, according to an article in the Diocese of La Crosse newspaper, dated July 16, 1987. A newspaper article about the church's centennial, held in 1957, also says the present church was built in 1901.
The congregation was formed in 1857. Two church buildings preceded the current building; there's no solid date on the first church, but the second church was built in 1869.
