Here is a great, hard to find vintage, soft cover cookbook from the Ladies Aid Society of the Zion Lutheran Church of Grand Rapids, Minnesota (MN). Although not dated, I found that the pastor was at this church between 1944 and 1948 which is confirmed by looking at the to the recipes, (Wartime white layer cake) the font used for the recipes, the ads (business phone numbers for the most part are ONE to THREE digits long.) Chapter index is in the back of the wire bound spiral soft cover recipe collection. Please let the whole page load and click on FULL DESCRIPTION to read all about this rare cookbook!
Some kitchen soil and discoloration to the front and back covers from age. INSIDE the pages are at least 95% free of any marks, stains or wriitng. If there are marks they are faint and small. The book has 157 pages with no index and an average of 6 recipes per page so this is PACKED with old fashioned comfort food recipes from Minnesota.
Chapters include: Beverages, Cakes & Frostings, Candy & Popcorn Balls, Cookies & Rocks (yes, it says rocks), Doughnuts - Fritters - Popovers - Griddlecakes - Waffles, Fish & Dressings, Hot Breads, Hot Dishes (MN Speak for Casseroles), Household Hints, Meats & Sauces, Pickles, Pies, Poultry & Dressing, Preserves - Jams - Jellies, Puddings-- Desserts - Sauces, Salads & Dressings, Sandwiches & Dressings, Scandinavian Recipes---nice section, Soups & Dumplings, Sugar Saver Recipes (WWII War rations of sugar*), Tables & Charts. And so you know...
SUGAR RATIONING
Rationing regulated the amount of commodities that consumers could obtain. Sugar rationing took effect in May 1943 with the distribution of "Sugar Buying Cards." Registration usually took place in local schools. Each family was asked to send only one member for registration and be prepared to describe all other family members. Coupons were distributed based on family size, and the coupon book allowed the holder to buy a specified amount. Possession of a coupon book did not guarantee that sugar would be available. Americans learned to utilize what they had during rationing time.
